Have you started teaching Place Value to 1,000? Many of my 3rd grade teachers tell me that they love this lesson and these resources to review at the beginning of the school year. Most 2nd grade teachers start chapter two {Place value to 1,000 for any math series.} after a month of school, but due to the fact that my 3rd grade teacher friends use this for a review, it is one of my best sellers during August and September. I hope it can help you too!
An Introduction Lesson for Place Value to 1,000
To prepare, create 30 index cards with one digit on each one, repeating 3 times. So, 1, 1, and 1 all on three different cards. I have two sets of easy, free, number cards if you would rather print them and then laminate them for years to come. Click here for the cookie version and here for the clip board version.

Now, for an introduction, you can explain, the place of a digit in a number tells its value. Then pick three of your students to randomly pick a digit card. Provide a small stack of duplicate digits from 0 to 9, or if your group needs to go slower, leave the 0 out to introduce ZERO as a place value HOLDING SPOT later.
Next, have the three students arrange themselves in any order at the front facing the other students. For example, they might be holding up 726. Explain that the 7 in 726 has the value of 7 hundreds or 700. The 2 has a value of 2 tens, or 20. The 6 has a value of 6 ones, or 6. Then have the same three students rearrange themselves.
If they make 627, ask the class some of the following questions:
What does the 2 represent? {2 tens or 20 are both correct answers.}
What does the 6 represent? {6 hundreds or 600} Etc.
Continue until everyone in your class has a chance to select a digit and create a three digit number with two classmates. 999 being your highest number. You can then introduce 0 in the ones, tens, and hundreds and give one more student 1 to cap your activity at 1 thousand, to push your higher students over the benchmark of Understanding Place Value Within 1,000.
