Tuesday Teacher Tips: Social Committee's Lunch Bunch

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Tuesday Teacher Tips: Social Committee's Lunch Bunch
Back to School Rerun Fun 2018
Tuesday Teacher Tips: School Social Committees
Every Tuesday Michelle, from Teach 123, and I will have a new installment of my favorite post, Tuesday Teacher Tips!
Click here to see the previous weeks.
This week's tip is about having a weekly Lunch Bunch.

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Tuesday Teacher Tips: Social Committee's Lunch Bunch

I love Lunch Bunch and I've been lucky enough to be a part of it at three schools now!
Directions:
Every Wednesday two people make lunch for 12 people. TWELVE PEOPLE!! I know, you are thinking it is a crazy idea already ~ but keep reading. You and a friend make enough food for 12 people this Wednesday, for example. A crock pot of chili, a pan of lasagna, club sandwiches, whatever your specialty is that most people will enjoy for lunch. You also provide some sides, like fruit, bread and cookies. Then for the next four weeks you do nothing on Wednesdays but show up to eat! Fabulous! We usually work on a five week cycle of 10 people cooking. Number 11 and 12 are the principal and assistant principal...they eat for free!
It is a lovely way to kiss up & seriously, they already do so much for us!

So your month would look like this:
Wednesday, Sept. 5th ~ Fern and Lilly
Wednesday, Sept. 12th ~ Andrew and Calvin
Wednesday, Sept. 19th ~ Heather and Anna
Wednesday, Sept. 26th ~ Karen and Mark
Wednesday, Oct. 3rd ~ Kathy and Ben
Wednesday, Oct. 10th ~ Fern and Lilly {repeat}

So ~ Pros:
*You wake up and not worry about cooking for 4 Wednesdays in a row!
*You get to try new and exciting foods and desserts!
*You learn new recipes for your family dinners!
*One less day a week you are staring at a cardboard box of frozen food!
*It develops a nice sense of getting to know each other and having something, other than school, to talk about at lunch while you share your  recipes!
Cons:
*One Wednesday every 5 weeks you are lugging food to school.
*Even with signs saying "Lunch Bunch Only, Do Not Eat" people will sometimes eat your food. {To avoid this have the first person coming to lunch set it out and then the last person to eat take the stuff back to their classroom.}

Looking for more tips?
Michelle has some great tips about a school's social committee that she would like to share with you, too.

Are You Getting Ready to Start Teaching Rounding to Estimate Differences?

If you are teaching Rounding to Estimate the Difference, this blog post has got some great lessons, tips, resources and freebies for YOU! 3rd Grade Go Math 1.8 Rounding to Estimate Differences. If you are teaching Rounding to Estimate the Difference, I've got some great lessons, tips, resources and freebies for YOU!

A quick way to estimate the difference of two numbers is to round each number and then subtract the rounded numbers. {See this previous post for help on rounding.} More often than naught, this won't be the exact answer but it may be close enough for some purposes. Students need this mental math not only for future math classes and math procedures, but it is also an excellent life skill. Do you have enough money for all your groceries? Did the cashier give you the right amount of change back? When you relate math to MONEY, even eight year old ears perk up! Problem solving extends to all aspects of their world.

If you are teaching Rounding to Estimate the Difference, this blog post has got some great lessons, tips, resources and freebies for YOU! 3rd Grade Go Math 1.8 Rounding to Estimate Differences.

Once your students have a strong foundation of rounding, you can move on to estimating the difference. Estimation is a powerful mathematical mental tool to be used both in solving problems and in checking the answer to see if it is reasonable.

Tips to introduce your lesson...
How to estimate a difference by rounding:
  • Round each number in the problem.
  • Subtract the rounded numbers together, mental math is even better.
More reasons WHY you would use rounding to estimate the difference:
  • Check to see if you have about enough money to pay for your meal at restaurant before you order. Lobster or hamburger?
  • Get a ball park idea to double check your answer to a problem. Is 300 an intelligent answer for 992 - 682?

Once you're done with your lesson, I have a variety of resources to help with your spiral review, use them in your math centers, small group lessons, seat work, partner work, the possibilities are endless!
