Are You Getting Ready to Start Teaching Rounding to Estimate Differences?

If you are teaching Rounding to Estimate the Difference, this blog post has got some great lessons, tips, resources and freebies for YOU! 3rd Grade Go Math 1.8 Rounding to Estimate Differences. If you are teaching Rounding to Estimate the Difference, I've got some great lessons, tips, resources and freebies for YOU!

A quick way to estimate the difference of two numbers is to round each number and then subtract the rounded numbers. {See this previous post for help on rounding.} More often than naught, this won't be the exact answer but it may be close enough for some purposes. Students need this mental math not only for future math classes and math procedures, but it is also an excellent life skill. Do you have enough money for all your groceries? Did the cashier give you the right amount of change back? When you relate math to MONEY, even eight year old ears perk up! Problem solving extends to all aspects of their world.

If you are teaching Rounding to Estimate the Difference, this blog post has got some great lessons, tips, resources and freebies for YOU! 3rd Grade Go Math 1.8 Rounding to Estimate Differences.

Once your students have a strong foundation of rounding, you can move on to estimating the difference. Estimation is a powerful mathematical mental tool to be used both in solving problems and in checking the answer to see if it is reasonable.

Tips to introduce your lesson...
How to estimate a difference by rounding:
  • Round each number in the problem.
  • Subtract the rounded numbers together, mental math is even better.
More reasons WHY you would use rounding to estimate the difference:
  • Check to see if you have about enough money to pay for your meal at restaurant before you order. Lobster or hamburger?
  • Get a ball park idea to double check your answer to a problem. Is 300 an intelligent answer for 992 - 682?

Once you're done with your lesson, I have a variety of resources to help with your spiral review, use them in your math centers, small group lessons, seat work, partner work, the possibilities are endless!

Tuesday Teacher Tips: Failure Is Just a Learning Experience

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas on Tuesday Teacher Tips: Failure Is Just a Learning Experience Freebie.
Tuesday Teacher Tips: Failure is Just a Learning Experience!
Every Tuesday Michelle, from Teach 123, and I will have a new installment of my favorite post, Tuesday Teacher Tips!
Click here to see the previous weeks.
Perseverance....there is no greater example of perseverance than a child learning to walk. The first time they fall, the second time they fall, the 1,256th time they fall, they get right back up and try again. Why? Because they don't know the definition of failure. No one has said, "Little baby, you have failed seven hundred times, give up." Nope, all the adults clap and cheer and take pictures and every FAILURE is a learning experience. Every time they fall over, the adults coo and goo and ahhhh and the adorable baby tries again.
However, somewhere around middle school and all that wonderful peer pressure we learn that failure is bad, failure is something that people will laugh at, so we stop trying as hard. We stop trying if people will notice us.
But we shouldn't! There is no such thing as failure, it is just a learning opportunity to get back up and try again.

Do I mean crash your car into the garage door over and over and over again? No, I mean use that first mistake, that first accident, to LEARN to open the garage door and check your mirror before you back out of the garage each time.
This is an important lesson to practice daily with your students and to model and discuss. If you have a morning message time, it is a perfect time to talk about how you handle life's little mistakes.
  • Taking the trash out and the bag broke.
  • Dropping your favorite glass in the kitchen.
  • Cooking a cake too long in the oven.
By modeling how you learned to handle small failures, even pretend ones you make up for your carpet time, your morning message time, you are giving students coping skills. I would love it if you would share some ideas that you have for helping students overcome failure in the comments.

Today's ♥Freebie♥ is an 8 X 10 picture for you to frame in your classroom or office. Get a $1 frame at the Dollar Tree or Target and you're good to go! :)
