Free Report Card Comments To Help With Your Report Card Deadlines

You Oughta Know About...a quick and easy way to knock out report card comments
Need help with report card comments? Deadlines are crazy, but do you enjoy writing something sweet on each and every report card? Pin this post to have help with some quick and easy report card comments! #FernSmithsClassroomIdeas
Need help with report card comments? Deadlines are crazy, but do you enjoy writing something sweet on each and every report card? Pin this post to have help with some quick and easy report card comments! #FernSmithsClassroomIdeas
My parents moved to the United States from the United Kingdom for a better life. They wanted to see their new "country" and they didn't mind dragging around their only child, me. I went to more elementary school than you can count on both hands, it was probably one of the reasons I wanted to become a teacher. I remember having so many great ones that were kind and loving to the New Kid.
But there was also one other thing I remembered, almost every report card use to say something like, "Fernley is a smart young lady who finishes her work quickly and goes on to bother others."
Boy, oh, boy did I love to bother others....nothing mean, just Chatty Cathy talk, talk, talk, talk, talk! I will never forget one year, my mom setting the report card down and saying something like, "Do you think they have a book of comments? This is the fifth CITY but the same comment!"
YEP!
Turns out they did have a book, actually a few books. There were books of teacher comments in the early 1970s and there are books of teacher comments available now! But now, we also have the beauty of the Internet.
Many of us have online report cards that are filled out online and then available for the parents to print at home. That's what my old district did, I was able to print my son's report card when I want to, or NOT print it and just view it online. Everything is automated, a #2 for needs improvement or an E for Excellent behavior, but as a mother, it is still nice to see a comment from the teacher, even a typed one. That shows me, that out of a classroom full of "little people" {or 150 high school "big people"} that teacher has taken the time to get to know my son.
But filling out report cards can be a stressful time of year, you are still planning and teaching the students, you have a report card deadline, usually even before the nine weeks is over and sometimes, administrator approval of your cards....lets face it, you don't get time during the school day to do this, you are more than likely doing all this work on a weekend, on your own time. :( But this is the one thing we shouldn't skimp on, taking the time to write nice comments will help develop your student - teacher relationship as well as gaining parental support.

Always start and end a report card comment with a positive comment, squeezing the bad news in the middle. Like an OREO cookie! :)

EXAMPLE: Michelle is a sweet, young lady who is kind to everyone. If she reads nightly for 20 minutes, her fluency and comprehension will improve. I love having her in my class!
I have found a few FREE sites where you can copy and  paste a terrific comment into your students' report cards. It also helps you when you're stuck with something to say about a student.

The Education World page has even broken down the report card comments by categories for you, behavior, social skills, etc.

This Scholastic article even has an eight page downloadable Word document FULL of wonderful report card comments, all extremely positive and well written.

These 62 report card comments are on a 2 page PDF, just print, place in your report card folder and refer to them later.

This report card comment page has wonderful comments and phrases to use while completing your report card. The comments are also perfect to use during parent-teacher conferences.

This post was originally part of a terrific blog hop, You Oughta Know... the links have expired, but if you Google it, you might still find some great ideas!

A Few Random Hurricane Michael Thoughts For Today

This is the playground at my school. Can you see the swings under the tree? 😢 Our entire county has no electricity, we’ve been told we wouldn’t for weeks and schools will be closed at least until the beginning of November.
Picture Credit: Dawn Tipton Benton - Best School Nurse In The World
But today the electric company's automated phone call states that it could be several weeks to months until everything is up and running.  I teach in the Florida Panhandle, in Marianna, Florida and I live about 10 miles to the east in Cottondale. The eye wall went right over Marianna. There are many worse areas to the south of us, but please lift Jackson County up in your prayers too.

My grown daughter and I "hunkered down" as the news likes to say, in the hallway of our home, while my husband, her boyfriend and my grown son worked for two of the scariest hours of our lives removing limbs off the roofs, dumping out buckets of water from what was coming inside, removing our fireplace bricks that tumbled down inside, and the list goes on... We never imagining a Cat 4, ALMOST a Cat 5 could travel so far inland. If you live where there are earthquakes, or tornadoes, you know what I'm talking about. These are a fact of life, you prepare for the worse, pray for the best and go about your day, so use to them passing to the east or west of you. Not this time and I have said over and over, all that matters is that my family {and my doggies} are safe. But my heart is breaking for my students, it is the NOT.KNOWING.ABOUT.THEM that is heart wrenching. Do they have water? Food? A dry bed? Gut Wrenching....

So that I don't snap completely, when it gets pitch dark around 7, I start to write in my journal about all of this, documenting property loss, tips for afterwards, reminders for my next hurricane kit and just prayers and the daily thoughts that I'm so happy to be able to say, "We're Cat 4 Survivors." I think I will write about all of that later for the blog, because I'm not a mommy blogger, but I am a Mom. I'm not a home decorator blogger, a fixer-up blogger, but I do live in a fixer-up! I'm not a survivalist blogger, but I did survivor.

No, I'm a teacher, that's what I was born to do, that's what God called me to do, and God doesn't call us to do easy things, he calls us to use the skill set he gave us for the good of others. JOY is our family motto, Jesus, Others, then Yourself. So eventually I will share, hopefully teaching someone else a tip or two. But right now I will lick my wounds, shallow my self-pity and pray specifically and continuously for my students and their families.
This is my She-Shed, a gift from my husband for storing my classroom supplies and part of our barn.
Back of the She-Shed, this enormous tree peeled it back like it was a can of tuna.
Before Picture with Big Chicken Standing Guard

There is so much work to be done on our home, the property and the community I’ll be off of social media for a while, but some previously scheduled things will run.
Please stay safe and know that I appreciate each and everyone of you.
Love, Fern
