Are You Reviewing Long Vowels This Week?

Are you reviewing Long Vowels this week? Maybe introducing them? One of my very favorite ways to start long vowels is with good ole' Silent E.

Another wonderful way to transition from short vowels to long vowels is with a two-fold page activity. Let each child pick a short vowel CVC word and then add silent e to the word on the other side of the page. {See picture.}
Reviewing Long Vowels with Videos, Activities and Resources at Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas.
Two-Fold Silent E Activity
If you are pushed for time, give your students the CVC word on an index card, otherwise, plan a little time for a discussion of real words vs. made up words, if you get gup and gupe, etc. Enjoy!
I have created some really cute long vowel I Have, Who Has cards lately, with the word only version being Dollar Deals.

Thanksgiving Turkey Keepsake
{Thanksgiving Fun Rerun Of One Of My Most Viewed Crafts}
I have this little project framed and bring it out every year for Thanksgiving, it is sitting on the front hall table right now.
The 15 y/o just rolled his eyes as he walked by it this morning.
That's OK, he worked hard on this when he was 7! By bring out their art {flaws and all} every year, when we're old and gray our children will know that they had parents who loved and valued them!
Directions:
Copy an outline of a turkey on card stock.
Give the students dried beans and peas to glue on the paper.
Two black beans are the eyes and
a piece of dried corn is the beak.
This will keep them busy for awhile! :)

This is one of my favorite tips.
At the start of the year I like to use these as a directed lesson. I tell them the exact crayons they will need, then we put the rest away. As I read each "code" they use the correct color crayon to mark it. For example met = green, so we color these entire line green. Then we find the word met in the page and mark green over the word. Later during reading rotations they can color it in and pull out the rest of the crayons and color the blank spaces their choice. You can also use a gradual release with this, letting them work in pairs, then independently, but having someone check it before they finish, etc.

Thanksgiving Quick and Easy To Prep Center Games

One of my favorite ways to store and use center games are with inexpensive notebooks. At the beginning of the school year I taught my students to pull out the cards and directions from inside the folder. Then, when they are done, this made cleaning up the center even quick and easier than it is to make it in the first place! Click here to see how I also like to use Ziploc baggies too!
Most all of my centers are rectangles so that you or a parent volunteer can quickly use a slicer to cut out all the pieces and make the center. Then everything fits in your file cabinet or storage bucket for that season or skill and you can still see the cover! My newest Thanksgiving centers are no different and they are now available in my store at TPT. Click on any picture to go directly to that center game.
