Time for Some Fun with a Blue Light Special Sale!

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas New Years Themed Resolution Writing / Social Studies Center $1 Blue Light Special
Do you remember shopping at K-Mart when suddenly you would hear over the speakers, "Attention K-Mart Shoppers, head over to the ____ department where there is currently a blue light special going on."  If you strolled over to the department you would find a flashing blue siren light with an employee who showed you an item from that department that was marked down for this surprise sale. This sale was only for a very short time and was a bonus for shoppers who happened to be in the store at that time.
When I was little my parents moved from Florida to Connecticut for a new job for my dad. My Mom didn't have a car and took a job working at the Kmart next to our apartments so that she could walk. I didn't realize then how poor we were, I just loved going to the Kmart after school for a Slurpee. :) My Mom had to work Christmas Eve so my Dad and I walked around waiting to drive her home, out of the clear blue we heard a Blue Light Special. My parents grew up in the UK, we had no idea what it was. Turns out that night my Dad bought us an Electronic Keyboard, an Air Hockey Table, Legos and all sorts of great toys. KMart's Blue Light Special was Crazy, Crazy, Crazy Fun! I thought we were millionaires! I look back now at how poor we were and how hard my parents worked. The strong work ethics they taught me lasted longer than any Air Hockey Table, but I still have very fond memories of Kmart's Blue Light Specials.
The holidays are over and all of the expenses that goes along with it.  It will soon be time to go back to school.  For the next week and few days, I will do a few blue light specials for my TPT store.  I will announce these specials on my Facebook page.  If you are not following it, I would suggest that you begin.  Make sure you comment or like some of the posts so you will continue to see my posts in your feed. I would hate for you to miss out on a blue light specials because I am going to mark down nine of my packets to $1. Click here for today's $1 resource!

I would just ♥love it if

  1. I was one of those employees who ran blue light specials! I worked at KMart from age 16 to age 20. Thanks for the sales and the trip down memory lane! I love your story, too. You were blessed to have such wonderful parents. I had very hardworking parents, and I appreciate all that they taught me. Happy New Year!
