I love teaching perimeter and area! Seriously, if I could, I would teach it all year! Need a fence? Need carpet? Maybe I should just get a job working for Lowe's or Home Depot!
From experience I had found that my children knew how to find the perimeter and given the perimeter, they could find the missing side. But when testing came, the shapes were unusual, awkward and just plain boring. Let's face it, no child WANTS to take standardized tests, but the more skills we give them, the more success they will have. AND the less likely to give in and just fake the answers.
My favorite tip to help students not miss any sides or double over in their counting of sides is to have them place a dot in the top left hand corner of the shape and then make a tally mark while they mark off and count each side. They will know that they are finished when each side has a tally mark. This tip is especially successful when it is an irregular shape that bends in and out like number 5 and 6 on this image.
Next
have them write the answer in the middle of the figure so they will not
forget when they are reading the four choices for A, B, C and D, etc.
Using markers also creates a sense of fun and something different in math, so I would recommend using markers when you practice this skill. Speaking of practicing this skill... I have a free worksheet for you at TeacherSherpa. If you are looking for more task cards, center games and printables, I've listed them below from my TpT store.
