Are You Teaching How To Divide By 3 and 6?

Research shows introducing division with two fact families at one time, like dividing with 3 and 6, helps your students with the mental math challenges that come with tackling division.
A few tricks and tips that also tie the two fact families together adds to the students tool kit in order to solve division problems in more ways than one. The Divisibility Rules help us to determine if a number will divide into another number without actually having to divide.

There is a divisibility rule for every number. However, some of the rules are easier to use than others. Dividing by 3 and 6 OR 2 and 4 OR 5 and 10 are a few of my favorite ones.

Here are the rules for 3 and 6.

The Rule for 3: A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3. So, if I want to know if 51 can be divided by 3 evenly, adding 5+1=6 and 6 can be divided by 3 without a remainder, so 51 CAN be divided by 3.

The Rule for 6: The prime factors of 6 are 2 and 3. So for a number to be divisible by 6, it must also be divisible by 2 and 3. Quick! Check if it is even and then check if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3. BAM! It can also be divided by 6!

Now, all your students may not be ready for so much at once, and you can certainly spiral back to it later in the year, with anchor charts and your direct morning math lesson. But introduce this for your students that are quick with mental math, and you might just hook them sooner rather than later with such a cool division trick.
