Are You Reviewing Fractions for Your State Tests?

Using I Have, Who Has? Cards for Reviewing Fractions on Your State Standardized Tests. Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas.
Fractions on the Standardized Tests
I always found on the state tests the two or three problems dealing with fractions were always tricky. Try as you might to prepare your students for a strong background in fractions, missing one or two test questions due to TRICKY or POORLY WRITTEN questions is not fair to students, not fair to teachers and not what the original point of testing was all about. But it is the way of the world right now, so the better prepared your students are, the better the chance they have at being successful.
Research shows the more you review with hands-on centers and games, the more your students will retain the information. Task cards, Scoot, I Have, Who Has? Games all keep your students up and moving. Their body AND brain are actively engaged.

Gold or Silver Oreo Cookie Coins for St. Patrick's Day

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Gold or Silver Oreo Cookie Coins for some St. Patrick's Day Fun in your Classroom!
Turning Oreo Cookies Into Silver and Gold Coins For St. Patrick's Day

** Throwback Thursday Rerun Fun **

Pinterest has some great pictures of Oreo Cookies painted gold for St. Patrick's Day. I put one of those pictures on my Facebook wall to share with my readers and the questions started....Have you done this? Did it dry quickly? Did it taste good?

Well, all good questions, I didn't know. So we went to the store and looked, and looked, annnnd looooked for the gold color mist that was on Pinterest.

However, we couldn't find any gold in our area, so we did the experiment with silver, a silver coin, close enough!

All you need are Oreo Cookies and Wilton Color Mist Spray! My children are 18 and 21, so this little experiment's results are for four adults. We sprayed the cookies, it was very simple, then the 18 year old immediately ate one, yucky, it was still wet and he said it tasted like "paint fumes" well...yeah, you were suppose to let it dry!

So we sprayed some more and let them dry over night and it is true, you can't taste the coloring. However, four out of four adults at our house agree that it masks the chocolate taste of the cookie part a little different. I would recommend doing this with your students, the spray is soooooo easy to use. But putting them up overnight before they eat them. You kids will just be so excited to be eating a St. Patrick's Day coin!

Are You Studying Community Helpers?

Talk about something HIGH INTEREST that the students love to learn about! Social Studies, Reading and Community Awareness all rolled into one! If you are teaching community helpers, to introduce this lesson, use an anchor chart to list as many community helpers as the students know. Ask them, "Do you think a teacher is a community helper?"
Community Helpers are a HIGH INTEREST subject that students love to learn about! Social Studies, Reading and Community Awareness all rolled into one which many students already have previous knowledge of, and therefore are very successful! Community Helpers!
Next, explain to them that a community helper is anyone who provides a service. Get as many community helpers listed as they know, police, dentist, mail carrier, etc.  Then as the lesson continues or as the week rolls by, you can have them add the new ones they learn about to the chart. One of the very best things about studying community helpers is that the students are so excited, their large word, extended vocabulary expands by leaps and bounds.

Next in the lesson, read one of these terrific books to expand their knowledge of community helpers.

{Please see my full disclosure page for more details, but if you click and purchase any of the above books, at no extra charge to you, I will receive a small amount of the purchase from Amazon to help with the cost of this blog.}

Depending on the grade level you teach, the students can complete one of the following activities, alone, with partners or in a group.

  • Draw a picture of their favorite community helper.
  • Cut out magazine pictures of their favorite community helpers and create a collage.
  • Write a letter thanking one of their favorite community helpers.
  • Create a news interview with a community helper.
  • Role Play their favorite community helper and have other students guess who they are.

If these resources are too hard for your grade level, I also have an adorable Community Helpers Coloring Book for your class.
