I ♥love♥ Groundhog Day!
It is one of the simplest, sweetest, holidays to bring into your classroom. You USUALLY don't have to worry about anyone in your class NOT celebrating it. The children adore a groundhog and the many cartoon style groundhogs on many of the resources. AND...it is perfect for teaching simple prediction, weather, and creative writing. This year, Groundhog Day is Sunday, February 2nd which is perfect for your predictions. On Friday give them a quick introduction about Punxsutawney Phil and how the US uses him as our official groundhog. Will he see his shadow? Will there be six more weeks of winter? Here is his official web site if you want to show them and learn more about his history, but before you go home, make a simple T-chart and ask them if he will see his shadow.

When I first started teaching, my Dad would record the news in the morning and then bring it to my classroom where I would show it on a big, old, ugly TV / VCR cart that I had to check out from the library. Oh yeah, you know what I'm talking about! You were probably a kid sitting there watching such GRAND technology! But now you lucky teacher, you, you can just go to Phil's web site to watch Phil looking for his shadow!
