If your district is practicing Distance Learning this Fall, you have my permission to send this free worksheet home in a work packet, by parent email, or to assign it electronically.

You will love this story, it is seriously perfect for the first week of school NO MATTER WHAT GRADE YOU TEACH! Chrysanthemum is a happy little girl who loves her name, until the first day of Kindergarten and the mean girls start making fun of her and her name. My real name is Fernley, and I've been there. We moved a lot between Florida and England when I was younger, so no matter what grade, I always like to start out the school year with celebrating our names instead of using them as a source of bullying. If you've never read this book, trust me, once you do you will use it every year.
A sample page is included, perfect to leave for a sub.

Three of my very favorite Kevin Henkes books for the first week of school are, Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried, and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse.
In addition to Chrysanthemum, two other favorites for the first week are also by Kevin Henkes.
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse is about Lilly, who loves school and her teacher. But one day she takes her purple plastic purse and her treasures inside it to share with her friends at sharing time. But, it's all just too thrilling to wait and she is busted by the teacher. She is so angry, that she continues to make bad choices, but it does have a wonderfully happy ending. This book is perfect for discussing when, and if, your students are allowed to bring personal toys to school.
Wemberly Worried is about poor Wemberly who worries about everything, especially the first day of school. Once she makes friends with a fellow worrywart in her class, school doesn't seem that bad! Perfect for your students that are nervous and worried about making new friends.
I hope you and your students enjoy some of my recommendations for the first week!
