Helping Students Make New School Friends After The Holidays!

While you are resting up this Holiday Vacation, here is an idea for when you return back to school in the New Year, it is one of my very favorite tips ever!
Happy New Year's Eve!

Helping Students Make New School Friends After The Holidays! By Fern Smith of Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas.
A Quick and Easy System To Help Your Students Make New Friends After the Holidays!

Do you ever have one of those weeks? Everyone is getting along in centers? Everyone gets to lunch without touching each other? Some weeks do you spend your time constantly asking them to stop tattling? How about your paperwork? Are you getting all your documentation done because your students are as good as gold every single day and staying on task?
Probably Not!

The biggest complaint this time of year on Facebook, ProTeacher and other teacher support forums, is that boys and girls are tired, grumpy, mean and disrespectful to each other. It is crunch time, teachers are trying to cram and review for unfair early testing. {Don't get me started on being tested for a "year's worth of growth" in February! You haven't even had them for one half of a year!} Students have been together since August, like a family stuck indoors on the third snow day, sometimes they are rubbing each other the wrong way.

Here is a quick and easy tip to help them make new friends and find some common interests. It will take no time away from your instructional time, I promise!

When going to recess, have everyone line up in two lines, boys and girls, in random order. In third grade I would have to use my old standby line, "I'm not asking you to get married, just to stand next to each other." If you have more of one or the other, match up two boys at the end or two girls, etc.
Walk out to the playground but before they play, they must take turns telling each other three interesting facts about themselves.

Example:
Fern: I have five dogs.
Heather: I have two dogs and two cats.
Fern: I'm allergic to cats.
Heather: I'm allergic to milk.
Fern: I can't wait to see the new Star Wars movie.
Heather: I saw it last night, it was so good.....

It should take no longer than one or two minutes and no one is allowed to go on the playground until the teacher dismisses them. This causes them to not rush and then run off before their partner is done, helping with manners too.

Instead of saying three things and the other student says three things, going turn by turn helps the children to make connections with each other. Some students may have a hard time thinking of three things, but something the other student says will help them with their next thought. Some days, they will go to the playground and continue to play with their group of friends, but lots of times this helps children, especially the shy ones, make new friends and include other students into their games.

Do this every day until you feel that it is helping. When your class wises up and they try to line up facing a friend, let the line get settled and move one person from the middle to the front, mixing up all the partners. Tell the class, this is a chance to meet somebody new, if they get a person they have already shared their facts with, tell them to pick three new facts.

If things are going smoothly in your classroom right now, put this in your bag of tricks for when Spring Fever hits, the End of the Year Excitement or the Beginning of the Year Stampede!

ARE YOU TEACHING HOW TO REWRITE TWO DIGIT SUBTRACTION PROBLEMS?

Are you working on the multiple ways to write subtraction problems with second graders? This blog post has some tips, resources and lessons to help you introduce and reinforce rewriting 2-digit subtraction problems. Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas
Rewrite Two Digit Subtraction
Are you working on the multiple ways to write subtraction problems? Here are some tips, resources and lessons to help you introduce and reinforce rewriting 2-digit subtraction.

1. Introduce on the board or with your digital camera...
82 - 64 =

2. Explain when working with regrouping, we find it easier to write the problems in this format.
  82
- 64

Also explain that students and adults alike are less likely to make mistakes when writing it this way.

3. Solve or have a student solve your example.

4. Continue with more examples as needed.

* Common mistakes to look for in student work, writing the digits in the incorrect column, for example, 46 in this problem instead of 64.

If you have not used graph paper in your classroom yet, I HIGHLY recommend getting some now. Your students will love working with something new, especially if you tell them they'll use it a lot in middle school or junior high school!  It will help keep the tens in one column and the ones in another, until they can transition to any blank paper.

I have four resources in my store to help you teach, reinforce and review rewriting 2-digit subtraction problems.

ARE YOUR STUDENTS PRACTICING TWO DIGIT SUBTRACTION PROBLEMS?

When you return to school in the New Year, here is one of my favorite games to review any skill, I use two-digit subtraction in this blog post to explain it.
Are you working on the multiple ways to write subtraction problems with second graders? This blog post has some tips, resources and lessons to help your students practice 2-digit subtraction problems. Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas
Practice, we all need it when learning a new skill, but sometimes it is difficult to schedule time in our daily routine for practice, so many new skills to teach.... we have to keep pushing forward. But practice is NEEDED, math, riding a bike, driving a car, etc. You know what I mean, you get the picture. Here's one of my favorite ways to get a few minutes of practice in during some downtime at school.

This game can be played a few different ways, boys against girls, tables against tables, or just predetermined teams. Have your contestants at the board and verbally give them a problem,
For Example: 65 - 28 =
a problem where they will need to write it correctly and regroup.

I give two points to the winner and one point to everyone else for doing the work, that way quitting is not allowed.

A few things to avoid and some tips to improve them.
1. Students making fun of someone slow, I take that team's entire points away. "If you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all."
2. A student giving up on working the problem when they are last. Let them pick a team mate to HELP them, to TALK them through the problem, to ENCOURAGE them not to give up. This will also support your classroom culture of kindness and empathy, and set up the standard for helping each other, WITHOUT just telling someone else the answer.
3. A student shouting out the answer, again, take away that team's points and the other team members will encourage them to keep quiet as the game continues.

I try to give a small treat to each team that wins, that way they want to keep all their points and not speak out of turn. A Skittle, an M&M or two, erasers, even treats that do not require money... lining up first for recess, sitting with a friend during silent reading, a homework pass, etc.

You can also keep points for the entire day or week, depending on your grade level, playing this game anytime you get five minutes and need a break. Of course, this game can work with ANY skill! Enjoy!

I have created four resources to help you in your classroom when your students need more practice 2-digit subtraction.
