Crayons and Crayon Management!

Love them or hate them, if you are a primary teacher, YOU.WILL.ALWAYS.NEED.THEM! First thing first, get rid of the box, 8? 16? 24? 64? There is nothing worse for a new teacher {or even a teacher with YEARS of experience} to bring their class late to lunch and then back up the ENTIRE SCHOOL. The pain I get from watching a student try to put their new crayons BACK into the box is like sporks being shoved under my eye lids. I get it, the crayons are new, I like to keep my crayons neat and tidy too, I like my crayons in rainbow order, but when we only get 22 minutes for lunch, I'm not allowed to play with my crayons! The classroom procedures have to be worked out in advance for a teacher to have as much academic time as possible in their day.

Also, when lunch runs like a well oiled machine, you at 11:22, your buddy's class at 11:24, second grade starts at 11:26, you can't say, "Sorry, we were putting all our pretty crayons back in the original boxes." Nope, nada, you might as well look for a new job right now..... Oh, yeah, you're laughing because not even the subways and trains running out of major cities run as smoothly as the time table for an elementary school cafeteria. Not laughing? Trying rolling in 30 minutes late for lunch tomorrow and see what bedlam you create. ;)

So here are some different tips for you, because it's never too late for your students to keep their crayons nice AND USABLE. It is also never to late to try a new plan, if you're hearing, "I don't have a bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue." over and over in your sleep, I hope one of these great teacher tips helps improve your classroom managment.

So again, I will state for my friends that skim read.....
GET RID OF THE BOX! YES, I MEAN IT, IT WILL MAKE LIFE TEN TIMES BETTER RIGHT OFF THE BAT!

QUICK TIPS:

* Thank you note cards and stationary come in terrific little boxes with lids around Christmas as impulse presents. Buy up as many as you can for a quarter after the holidays and hold them until the school year.

* If you have a family with younger students, ask them to be on the look out for the stationary boxes since you will usually have their next child the following year. They can keep the stationary, you just need the boxes.

* Students have responsibly for their own crayons and the lid helps keep things tidy

* Flexible, can be kept on the desk or inside the desk

* Finding a color is still EASY no matter if it is 8 count or 24 count

* Clean up takes less than 10 seconds

QUICK TIPS:

* My favorite as a parent!

* Teaches responsibility for keeping track of their own supplies.

* Every child has their initials on their supplies with Sharpie markers.

* Ask on your summer supply list for the family to do this at home

* Get a high school student the first week of school who needs community service hours to stop by each day the first week of school. They can sit in the back with their ear buds in or go desk to desk and "meet the student" while putting the initials on the supplies.

* Can be kept in the regular supply box or any of the other above suggestions

* Two children with FS initials? Use their middle initial as well, FMS and FAS are just as easy to write.

* Your "busybodies" who LOVE to help are great at finding lost crayons on the rug and finding the correct owners!
