Spreading Love and Building Relationships with Your Student Awards!

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas - Spreading love and building relationships with your student awards.I Put ♥Mrs. Smith Pretty Much on Everything!
I love awards, I love award ceremonies, I love seeing a group of boys and girls holding up a piece of paper like it is a million dollars and smiling a big, missing-toothy grin at the parents! Even cuter, one certificate is usually upside down!!!

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas - Spreading love and building relationships with your student awards.

I also loved filling out awards, I would put a heart next to Mrs. Smith on everything. I love teaching and I love kids, just like all of you... but the kids need to know it too! No matter what type of awards my schools would buy, I write "♥Mrs. Smith" or "Love, Mrs. Smith" on every, single one! Even when there is no line, I squeeze it into the corner. Any chance we get to build a relationship with our students, we need to take it.

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas - Spreading love and building relationships with your student awards.

So many teachers don't understand, the more work you put into the relationship, the less work you will have to put into discipline! When your kids love you and know that you love them, they will bend over backwards to be good for you ~ I guarantee it! The extra time spent writing "♥Mrs. Smith" on all the awards is ten-times better than having to write an office referral.

Seasonal Writing Centers

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Quick, Easy and Inexpensive Seasonal Writing Centers.Seasonal Writing Centers
This is one of my favorite, inexpensive, writing centers, especially for new teachers. All you need is a piece of poster board and some sticky notes. Draw, cut out and laminate a seasonal item, this pumpkin for fall, a flower for spring, etc. You can use your document camera to project it and trace it! :)
When you first start this center, you will need to model it and role play because everyone will want to walk back and forth to get a sticky note, but that's OK, as the year rolls on they will get use to the system and the best part....you can teach your small groups without interruption.
Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Quick, Easy and Inexpensive Seasonal Writing Centers.
Fill up your poster with as many sticky notes as you want, depending on the grade level. You can start with just five or load it up! The students are allowed to take one sticky at a time to use that word in their writing. They need to write the word in their personal dictionaries, word work folders, whatever you use in your classroom, but that's the ONE "MUST DO" RULE.
By having the correct spelling of seasonal vocabulary, it will give them more confidence in their writing as well as an idea about what to write about if they are stuck. I've included two lists for you, a Fall List and a Halloween List.
Enjoy!

Using Seasonal Sticky Notes in the Classroom!

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Using Seasonal Sticky Notes in the Classroom for a Working Number Line.
Creating a Daily Classroom Number Line
One of my favorite things to do, is a Morning Meeting at my classroom calendar. Many skills can be tucked into a quick ten minutes in the morning. Seasonal sticky notes are a terrific way to keep track of the number of days we've been at school. Even with the upper elementary grades I loved doing this because as the year rolls on, they have a visual number line, in groups of ten, to help as an anchor chart for multiplication, division, even some intermediate level students still need support with basic addition and subtraction facts....

Directions and Materials:
* 20 - 21 different seasonal sticky note pads, you will need 10 of each type. Ellison die cuts will also work well.
* Pre-cut a strip of ribbon, cash register tape, construction paper, etc. to the length of TEN seasonal sticky notes. About four feet for the store bought sticky notes.
* Place on an empty area next to your calendar. It will grow and fill the space as school progresses.
* Each day write the number for that school day and place on the ribbon. This is also a great job for the class helper. It is always very hot in Florida when we go back in August, so I use some summer themes and then progress to the cute back to school stuff for September, fall for October, etc.
* As each day unfolds you will have created in groups of ten, a working number line for your classroom.
