Place Value

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Christmas Place Value - A Week's Worth of Place Value for Second and Third Grade.
A Week's Worth of Place Value for Christmas for 1.NBT.2, 2.NBT.A.1 and 3.NBT.A.2.
So a couple of weeks ago I met up with one of my blogging buddies...seriously, IN.REAL.LIFE! I was completely stepping out of my comfort zone, even driving over a three mile bridge by myself! OK, go ahead and laugh, but I love working from home and I am constantly reminded of Meg Ryan's quote in the movie You've Got Mail. She says, "I lead a small life...and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave?"
My parents wanted to see the United States, so we traveled and traveled and traveled. Then we ended up in this teeny-tiny town called Orange Park when I was twelve. I couldn't wait to leave, then I couldn't wait to get back. I now live directly south of Orange Park in Fleming Island and I'm giddy-happy waking up, getting a cup of coffee and working in my office or my lanai. But sometime "I lead a small life..." runs around in my head and when Deborah from Happy Edugator recommended that we have lunch, I jumped at the chance to be brave, to have a bigger life!
When we met at the World Famous Olive Garden, {hey, I said I was being brave, not crazy...all you can eat soup and salad!} we decided to collaborate on a Place Value Christmas resource. I published it today and I'm really happy with how it turned out. It contains a Smart Board file, task cards, two PowerPoints, center games, and printables.

SNAP Learning Close Reading Program – a Definite Homerun!

SNAP Learning Close Reading Program – a Definite Homerun!
Today's Guest Post is from LeAnne Tellez, a fifth grade teacher at the Harold S. Winograd School in Colorado.
Please welcome her!
SNAP Learning Close Reading Program – a Definite Homerun!
As a fifth grade teacher, I am always looking for resources that can capture my students’ attention, make my job easier, and, most importantly, ensure student learning. I have found a resource that is a true winner. I have been utilizing SNAP Learning Close Reading Program in my after school remedial program twice a week.
SNAP Learning Close Reading Program – a Definite Homerun!

Before we started, I assessed my students and determined the Lexile Level for each of my students. Using that information, I have been able to use the SNAP Learning Close Reading Program to select a variety of texts, both fiction and nonfiction, from which my students can choose. The selections for each student are in his/her Lexile range.

My students have enjoyed selecting their own texts and working through the close reading tasks. Each day they log in to the website, read the text they have chosen, and do the associated tasks. The tasks closely match the expected format of our new state testing for reading/writing. They require students to write short constructed responses, cite evidence from the text to support their answers, and be able to identify specific parts of a text such as the main idea.

Using the SNAP! Learning Close Reading Program has been a phenomenal way for students to take charge of their own learning. When they arrive at the after school class, they are excited to quickly get a laptop, get logged on, and start working through their text. I rarely, if ever, have to deal with classroom management issues as the students are excited, motivated, and determined to work hard with their chosen materials.

Why I love SNAP's Close Reading program:
· Reading strategies are tailored to student's reading levels
· Self-guided lessons build my students’ confidence
· Limited planning required from me!
· Easy, ready reports documenting student use and achievements
SNAP Learning Close Reading Program – a Definite Homerun!
As a teacher, I love the limited planning required for me as I have plenty of planning and preparation for other lessons and activities. With the use of SNAP! Learning, I am confident my students are learning reading skills and strategies that are tailored to their reading levels. In addition, the self-guided lessons build my students’ confidence because they can see their improvement and achievement. I especially like the available reports that document student use and achievement. In this way, I can prove to parents, administrators, myself, and the students that the SNAP! Learning Close Reading Program is making a difference in student learning and achievement.
