Tuesday Teacher Tips: Recess

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Tuesday Teacher Tips: Indoor Recess Help!
Tuesday Teacher Tips: Indoor Recess Help

Every Tuesday Michelle, from Teach 123, and I will have a new installment of my favorite post, Tuesday Teacher Tips!
This week's tip is about games you can play during indoor recess.

In Texas, my district wasn't allowed to go outside over 100 degrees. In Florida, it rains and we're not allowed to go out. Up north, where I've never taught, but spent a cold second grade year of my life, you can't go out if it is icy.....

What's a teacher to do?
I've been writing a series about indoor recess games and this week, our Tuesday Teacher Tip subject is recess! I love indoor recess and having some terrific games can make it so much better!

Bright Ideas Blog Hop: Read to Self

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas Bright Ideas Blog Hop about the Daily Five's Read to Self Tip.
Read to Self
Readers Need To Read Every Single Day!
How can we expect children to learn to read if we don't give them class time to read? I was a teacher for a long time when those word hit me smack in the forehead! Just because I went home and read as a child, just because my children went home and read everyday, just because we tell children to go home and read ... it doesn't really mean that children DO go home and read daily.

We must squeeze at least 20 minutes a day into our reading block for students to read material that
1. interests them and
2. is on their reading level.

Twenty minutes a day, in class, equals 60 hours a school year. Sure, we have a lot to teach, there is a lot to do each day, but squeezing 20 minutes in a day not only gives your students 60 extra hours of literature and vocabulary compared to other children, but also shows them the IMPORTANCE of reading. Then indirectly, the ♥LOVE of reading.

The Daily Five is a structured system that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy. If you're not familiar with it, I recommend you Google it, as there are many resources available as well as The Daily Five website from the authors of the book. You can start out with just trying to fit a "Daily Three" into your routine, Read to Someone, Read to Self and Word Work. Last month I wrote about Read to Someone, today I wrote about Read to Self and you guessed it, next month will be Word Work. I would love to have you come back! :)
Reading 20 minutes a day, that's my tip, I hope it helps!
