 The Daily Five!
The Daily Five is a wonderful management system for any and all reading groups. If you have never heard of it, here is a link to their website. If you do know it and use it, you probably really like it!
I ♥love it!

The best part of the program is the ownership the children have with the program. That ownership cuts down on behavior problems. The Writers want to come to school and go to the Writing Center first. The Readers want to Read to Self first. The quality work comes from the child's decision to work. However, teach long enough and you will have "ONE OF THOSE YEARS!" One year where nothing works, one year that the teachers in first grade tell the second grader teachers, WATCH OUT! One year where you have so many bad behaviors, that they flock to each other, like moths to a flame. Oh yeah, you know what I mean!

So one year, I had to assign them to the stations, no choice, I just had so many kids that were such darlings, they had to be separated....and have you noticed?
They always seem to be your Perfect Attendance babies as well!

BUT, here is the trick to making it look random. Color code your groups, then pass out these bookmarks as if it was all random. Teachers are happy, kids are happy, your Reading Centers flow again! I love paint sample cards, they are durable, they are colorful and they are free. I am a complete geek, I ask permission for them every, single time. This weekend, the lady at Home Depot even told me, "Yes Ms. Fernie, take what you need!"

    1. The paint chips are in the picture. They are the kind that have seven shades of one color on the sample card.
