My Twelve Photos on the Twelfth of January!

Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas, All sorts of ideas, freebies, resources and help for elementary school teachers, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade and sixth grade.
It is 12 on the 12th Linky Party at My Friend Stacy's Blog, Simpson's Superstars!
Why do I have a picture of all those paint sample cards you might ask? Because my husband started the Saturday off with, "Do you want to run to Home Depot with me?" I'm like a crack addict ready for another hit....Home Depot? Paaaaaint Saaaaample Carrrrrds! :)
I am a self confessed geek, I always ask the paint people if I may have some, they never say no. My husband wanders away to another aisle while I wait in line to "Do the right thing and ask permission."

I use the paint sample cards for fact families!

They are great for all sorts of things!
Anyway.....here are my 12 photos on the 12th!
I worked on our Magical Product Swap Post most of the day for my friend Abby, if you missed it, click here to see her terrific Swimming with Suffixes Unit. This is My Home Office
I'm at the front of the house and it is large and bright with big windows and I've crammed as much as possible into it! Yes, it is January 12th and my Santa Tree is still up. It has over 250 Santas that my mom collected, so putting it up each year reminds me of her. {Side note...all of Christmas comes down this weekend, don't judge....three day holiday and report cards are done.....you know the feeling right?}

This is the BEFORE picture from when we moved in last year, just thought you might like a laugh! I called that post,
Why Is My Home Office Not On Pinterest?

This is my view, it's the Man Cave, a work still in progress, but this is why I like my desk smack dab in the middle of the room. Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas, All sorts of ideas, freebies, resources and help for elementary school teachers, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade and sixth grade.
I can watch the big screen TV from my desk when the doors are open....please notice Anna to the right, my handy-dandy assistant working hard, excuse me, hardly working!

Saturday, I also took all of my files that use to be in a haphazard A to Z system and moved them to a financial planner's system that I read about in The Automatic Millionaire: A Powerful One-Step Plan to Live and Finish Rich by David Bach. I ♥love how big my desk drawers are, the hubby got my desk for free at a surplus event and painted it black. I can't find a before picture, but I really ♥love it!
Back to the filing system, I also moved all the tab to the right hand side...I read on some organizational blog that it is easier on the eyes to go straight back in a line looking for a file then side to side to side....I'll keep you posted on that idea...

If I like it, I eventually make pretty folders and tabs....like 2015 or 2016, I'll put it down as #101 on my list of things to do!

Here are two of my other assistants, actually bent out of shape with each other taking turns on the comfy chair. Notice the ears are back and they are glaring at me? They're telling me to buy another chair...

All three of them come from Queen Lilly, she had one litter, 13 healthy puppies when we lived in Texas. Many of my former students now have Lilly's offspring! :) As you can tell, I'm running out of ideas for this 12 on the 12th since I pretty much stayed home!

Hubby added water to the fish tank and Sucker, our algae eater, keeps it nice and clean. Sucker, I ♥love his name, I crack myself up...once an elementary teacher, always an elementary teacher!

This is a neat little device I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It is a remote control for the Christmas Tree lights. I put one in every room. I like it better than the timers because the lights didn't have to be on when we weren't home, saving electricity. Why is it hanging on a tack by the light switch? Do you have teenagers? No remote control EVER ends up where it is suppose to, even the garage door controls in the cars....have little babies?
You'll be thinking of me and this post in 15 years! Swear! :)

This is Abby's Unit I was working on, again, something else I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Third Grade Science Notebook Freebie!

Earth Science Notebook
For my new followers, I teach four classes a day. Math to two different classes and Science to the same two groups. I ♥love "teaming." It has turned me into a better Math teacher AND it forces me to teach Science each and every single day! You know what I'm talking about, sometimes when you're self contained, you take just a little longer to finish a great Reading lesson, so Science or Social Studies suffers. But not with teaming, I have a set amount of time to get things done and then they go to my teaching partner for Reading and Social Studies.
Last year our district started using a new Science series and we were told we had to have a Science notebook. But that was about it, no training, just...have a notebook. So I made the following note page to put into our notebook
 * The SECTION TITLE teaches them to read the Bold Title daily and make a prediction about what we are going to read
* The three INTERESTING FACTS allows them to reflect on their reading and build on previous knowledge. We also use this to explain that although it is a FACT, it is also their OPINION about it being interesting. Someone else might have three different FACTS.
* BEFORE YOU MOVE ON is where we answer the three higher level questions in our reading passage.
* Then, my favorite part is the box, ANYTHING ELSE I FOUND INTERESTING. This is where we have them differentiate. The low children can just draw a picture. Middle level can draw and label a diagram, and the higher students MUST draw, label and write a sentence or two using the chapter vocabulary.

Our textbook is broken down into three sections, Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science. Since they are still young, it is hard for eight year olds to keep a notebook all year without pages ripping and falling out of the binder. So we take each section and place it into a folded piece of 11 x 18 construction paper
TADA, their very own book!
I also use the cover as an informal assessment, they have to draw their favorite part about studying Life Science or Earth Science, etc. Then at the end of the year they get to take home all three books.

The Books Also Look Cute Up In the Room!
