Compare and Contrast Lesson ~ Sometimes It Is Like Pulling Teeth!

As an introduction to our Candy Characteristics lesson, I explained who a “character” is and then how to describe a character ~ their characteristics. Using a compare and contrast map, I picked someone on our staff that my entire class would know. Our AP. He’s the exact opposite of me, I’m a short, white, “fluffy” female and he is a tall, thin, distinguished African-American male.

Me: Describe Mrs. Smith
Right off the bat they started kissing up to me….
Kids:
Nice
Funny
Great math teacher
Amazing science teacher
Nice jewelry
Nice clothing
Good shoes
Beautiful
Pretty
Me: Ok, thank you, thank you, thank you, but describe my hair, skin, eyes, etc….
{It was like pulling teeth to get some basics out of them…}

Kids:
Mascara {ok…that relates to my eyes…}
Blonde
Blue eyes
White
Female
Short
Lady

So then we jump to describing the AP...
Kids:
Nice ties
Cool
Fair {pretty mature answer!}
{So again, it was like pulling teeth to get physical descriptions, I have to help guide them…}
Tall
Brown eyes
Male
Brown hair

Finally, everything we need for contrast, now to compare…
Me: What does Mr. B and I have in common?
Kids: BLANK.STARES ~ nothing but silence…
Me: We're bothhhhhhhhhhh….
Kids: BLANK.STARES AGAIN, you can hear the crickets...
Me: We're both peeeeeeeeeeeeeoppppppppppppp?
Kids: NOTHING
Me: People?!?!?
Kids: Ohhhh
Me: What else?
Ring, Ring, the phone ringing breaks the silence of this painful lesson. Mrs. O is doing the same thing and looks a lot like me. She says, "Well you'll be glad to know, Mr. B and I both work at McDonalds!"
Misery loves company and it was nice to know the lesson was as painful in her room as it was in mine! And~Wow! Working at McDonalds was definitely the best fundraiser we ever had! :)

  1. Oh no! I was just reviewing lesson plans for this week and it's all about comparing and contrasting! Thanks for the heads up. Sometimes when I get the blank stares I pretend I'm holding a microphone and hit it and say "Hello? Is this thing on?"
